Updated iTools, its Apache configuration software, to v6.5.7 for Mac OS X 10.2.2 last week. Tenon's iTools provides a Web-based GUI, as well as an Aqua iTools Manager, for configuration and management of Apache, DNS, and FTP. The new package updates Apache to version 1.3.27, modssl to 2.8.12, and OpenSSL to 0.9.6g. It also includes software improvements in a number of areas and is designed to make running on Mac OS X Server seamless.

The American Kennel Club's list of the most popular dog breeds is out and -- no surprise -- the Labrador Retriever is No. 1 again -- for the 24th time.

Tenon updated its Apache Web server configuration software for Mac OS X with a Web-based graphical user interface and tools for managing and configuring Apache, DNS, and FTP. In addition to updating the iTools 6.5.7 core package, the PHP package was also updated to the latest 4.2.3-2 version. Tenon's tools are designed to complement and extend Apple's included Apache and make it easy and fail-safe for webmasters to set up and support sophisticated network servers. Next year, Tenon plans to introduce iTools 7.

The Mac Observer Express Daily Newsletter Site Navigation. Today's News On One Page May 15th, 2000 4:00 PM Apple Stock Watch: Tech Stocks Rally, But Apple Tanks On Job's WWDC Keynote by Both the Dow and the Nasdaq experienced another nervous rally on light volume ahead of FOMC meeting which is expected to spring a half point interest rate hike tomorrow at 2:15 pm. But Apple did not participate in the rally as the market reacted to disappointing news from the WWDC regarding a delay in the OS X release date. Steve Jobs said in his keynote address at the WWDC that OS X 1.0 won't be released till January of 2001 instead of this July as most investors had expected. OS X beta is scheduled for release this summer. The delay isn't expected to materially effect Apple's earnings per share in 2000. While the pundits will blame today's AAPL sell off on the announcement of OS X's delayed release, at least half the decline is due to what Steve Jobs didn't announce.

Many disappointed investors were hoping for a few clues from the keynote about Apple's 'beyond the box' and Internet appliance plans. None materialized. Meanwhile, Sony gave investors a few clues about its plans for handhelds in the future. A, 'This fall, Sony will introduce a sub-$200 PDA with color display, limited wireless Internet access, multimedia capabilities and add-on storage capabilities through its Memory Stick technology, sources say. At the same time, the company will likely announce another, lower-end device with more limited capabilities.'

Apple declined 6 5/8 or 6.16% to close at 101 dollars on huge volume of over 6 million shares trading hands, twice the normal volume. The Nasdaq climbed 78 points higher (2.22%), after falling 86 points in the morning, to closed at the day's high of 3607 on anemic volume of 1.1 billion shares making this the lightest volume day of the year.

It looks like a double bottom is forming in the Nasdaq's daily chart, but we need a strong volume break out day for confirmation. The Dow soared 198 points (1.98%) to close at 10807 on very light volume of 850 million shares. Today's Dow rally was considered more convincing by some traders than the tech advance over on the Nasdaq. Brokerage stocks and basic materials, including energy stocks, advanced strongly today. The S&P 500 gained 31.40 points (2.21%) to close at 1452.36.

The Mac Observer took a big hit on Apple's share price decline. In Apple related businesses: Akamai bounced back 4 1/4 to close at 74 3/4. ARM Holdings gained 1 3/16 to close at 2911/16. Adobe traded higher by 1 13/16 to close at 110 dollars. Earthlink climbed 1 11/16 to close at 20 11/16. Motorola climbed 1/2 to close at 96 3/16. IBM slid 5/16 to 104 1/8.

Apple's competitors: Hewlett Packard lost 2 1/16 to close at 129 1/2. Intel gained 3 1/8 to close at 118 1/8. Gateway fell 3/8 to close at 53 dollars. Compaq climbed 3/4 to close at 27 7/8. Shares of Microsoft gained 9/16 to 69 3/8. Industrial production, a measure of the output of US factories and utilities climbed 0.9% in April (an annual basis of 6.1%) its largest gain in over a year. Capacity utilization, the percentage of factory's assets put to use in production, rose to 82.1% last month from 81.7% in March.

Operating capacities above 84% are considered inflationary by economists, since at above that rate corporations generally begin to add capacity and try to past the cost along to customers. The bellwether 30-year US Treasury bond climbed 18/32 ahead of tomorrow's Fed meeting to 101 7/32. The yield, which moves inversely to the price, fell to 6.16%. Apple's stock began to fall straight out of the gate this morning bottoming out at 10:30 am EST, but never could mount a comeback as the Nasdaq began an afternoon rally.

AAPL fell 6 5/8 to close at 101 dollars on over 6 million shares traded, that's almost twice the stock's normal volume. Wall Street apparently didn't want to hear that the final version of Mac OS X, which most thought would be released this summer, is delayed till January of 2001. Instead a beta version of Mac OS X will be released this summer. On top of the negative OS X announcement, the news Wall Street really wanted to hear - something concrete about Apple's 'beyond the box' strategies and perhaps intimations of a future Internet appliance - never materialized.

While this news is more disappointing than damaging to Apple's bottom line, it comes at a point of serious weakness in AAPL due to investor uncertainty over Apple's future course. Today's Keynote address did little to reassure nervous shareholders who shrugged off the positive software announcements in the keynote to focus on the OS X delay. The Mac Observer Spin: Delays in OS release dates are common and serve a real purpose. To release OS X 1.0 before all the testing and tweaking is rigorously completed is a recipe for disaster in the marketplace. Kudos to the brave engineers at Apple who have the foresight to demand it gets done right the first time rather than rush to meet an arbitrary deadline. 4:00 PM WWDC News: No New Hardware Announced, At Least Not Yet by Many have been waiting for today's WWDC keynote in hope that new Mac hardware would be announced. Unfortunately there was none, though Steve Jobs' keynote was jam packed full of Mac OS X and WebObjects news.

While no new hardware was announced, there is a separate keynote tomorrow from Mitch Mandich, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales, Jon Rubinstein, Senior Vice President, Hardware Engineering, and Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. That's a heavyweight team who all have a focus on Mac hardware. Note too that Phil Schiller often assists Steve Jobs with new product announcements. With this in mind, we think it likely that Apple will in fact introduce new hardware during tomorrow's keynote.

For a full list of our speculation, see our. The Mac Observer Spin: It's not Apple's fault that everybody and their brother was expecting new hardware to be announced today, other than the fact that they are the company who is woefully behind in the processor wars.

It is certainly not their fault that some folks were expecting a multiprocessor machine today, that is entirely the rumor sites' responsibility. The fact is that today's keynote obviously had enough information to take up a full 2 hours. It's interesting to see Steve Jobs allow the sexier product announcements be handled by his management team. That is of course assuming that we will in fact see new products tomorrow. Lastly, we simply can not imagine what else these three would possibly talk about if it was not new hardware. See you tomorrow, it should be an exciting day! Editorial by Kyle D'Addario 3:00 PM Apple Adds Important Consulting & Training Services for Core Server Products by Staff Apple announced today that it will provide consulting services for WebObjects, QuickTime Streaming Server and Mac OS X.

List

The expanded services organization, called Apple iServices, will provide professional services for Apple customers and developers in the creative, education and business markets. According to Apple: 'Apple has accumulated many years of experience designing, developing and deploying web-based applications, managing software projects and integrating heterogeneous systems with WebObjects,' said Mitch Mandich, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Sales. 'We are now expanding that expertise to address the growing number of customers seeking customized Internet solutions and integration services relating to Apple's QuickTime Streaming Server and Mac OS X, Apple's next generation operating system.'

'We initially chose WebObjects for the BBC News Online project because of its flexible development capabilities and its robust and scalable deployment architecture,' said Mike Smartt, Editor in Chief, New Media, at BBC News. 'Coupling this technology with the Apple iServices consulting team allowed us to create the resilient and scalable applications we needed for the project's success.' The Mac Observer Spin: While there are not yet any details on how this will work and what it will cost, it is great to see that Apple is getting back to providing value added services to their products. Coupled with the HUGE price drop for WebObjects, this could turn into a very lucrative venture for Apple, as well as a base for further expansion of the platform. 2:40 PM Lord Of The Rings Trailer Helps Push QuickTime To Over 50 Million Downloads by Staff As Apple announced that QuickTime 4 has exceeded over 50 million downloads, they were showing off a preview of the next version of the multimedia software. At today's WWDC, Apple announced that with the help of the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and more recently The Lord of the Rings trailers, QT 4 has broken the 50 million mark.

However, fans of the software are in for a treat. According to Apple: Apple® today announced that more than 50 million copies of its QuickTime™ 4 player software have been distributed for Mac® and Windows users worldwide, and gave developers at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) a sneak preview of the next version of QuickTime which will debut this summer. In addition, Nielsen//NetRatings has named Apple's Web site the most popular destination for movie trailers on the web. Contributing to the success of Apple.com's Quicktime-based movie trailer section, downloads for New Line Cinema's 'The Lord of the Rings' preview, encoded exclusively in QuickTime, topped 12 million since its April 7 debut, making it one of the largest online entertainment events ever. Additionally, Apple gave developers at WWDC a sneak preview of its next version of QuickTime, which will be available this summer and includes cross-platform support for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, Flash 4 for web animation, and an enhanced QuickTime VR playback function providing unlimited spherical views of virtual-reality scenes.

The new version of QuickTime also will feature QDesign software that has been optimized to take advantage of the Power Mac™ G4's Velocity Engine™ to encode music up to three times faster. You can find about QuickTime at the Apple web site. 2:30 PM WWDC News: Web Objects Drops From US$50,000 To US$699, Version 5.0 Coming by Staff In an attempt to deploy Web Objects into more developers tool kits, Apple has announced an astronomical price break on the Web Objects development package. Previously available for over US$50,000, the complete package is now available for US$699.

On the heels of that announcement, Apple also indicated that Web Objects 5 will be shipping later this year, and will be done entirely in the Java programming language. According to Apple: Later this year, Apple will ship WebObjects 5 for Java, which will be built using 100 percent pure Java technology. WebObjects 5 for Java will enable Internet developers using Java to quickly build complex solutions which can be deployed on virtually any server.

WebObjects 5 for Java also will support a wealth of Internet standards including Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) for interoperability and JDBC for universal database connectivity. 'WebObjects is the premiere software for rapidly developing and deploying web applications to millions of users worldwide,' said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. 'With its new pricing and support for Java, WebObjects is now accessible to a wider audience of customers and developers.' WebObjects is an end-to-end application server with tools, technologies and capabilities that make it an easy-to-use, standards-compliant solution. It has an object-oriented architecture that promotes quick development of reusable components. WebObjects provides scalability, load balancing and fault-tolerant capabilities for multithreaded applications running across multiple CPUs that support high transaction volumes. Apple is also offering new consulting services for customers who would like to implement a customized web application developed in WebObjects as part of its expanded professional services organization which delivers consulting, integration and training services for WebObjects, QuickTime™ Streaming Server and Mac® OS X.

The expanded services organization, Apple iServices, will provide professional services for Apple customers and developers in the creative, education and business markets. You can purchase Web Objects at the, and find at the Apple web site.

The Mac Observer Spin: This might be the best news to come from the WWDC this year! WebObjects is remarkably powerful, yet the barrier to entry has always been way too high for all but established companies.

Apple should be able to increase WebObject's market share many fold with this new pricing plan, and we applaud this move. 2:25 PM WWDC News: Mac OS X Delayed, PR 4 Released, Public Beta Due Later this Summer by Staff Apple today released its fourth developer preview of Mac OS X to the 4,000 developers attending its annual Worldwide Developer Conference.

The company also announced that a public beta would be released this summer. The original schedule had called for a final release of the product this summer with all shipping Macs coming preloaded with Mac OS X by The beginning of 2001.

According to Apple: This preview version of Apple's next generation operating system includes the final API specifications required by developers to complete upgrades of their applications to take full advantage of Mac OS X's new capabilities. Mac OS X Developer Preview 4 also includes a special Mac OS X version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5 as well as support for the Java 2 Platform. 'With this Preview release, developers now have everything they need to make killer applications for Mac OS X,' said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. 'We are incredibly pleased at the support we are getting from many of the world's best software developers for Mac OS X, the future of the Mac platform.'

Mac OS X supports the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) featuring the HotSpot client virtual machine. Mac OS X, a completely new implementation of the Macintosh operating system, will be the only high-volume personal computer operating system with out-of-the-box Java 2 integration. Java applications running on Mac OS X will realize the benefits of the Aqua user interface, a major advancement in personal computer user interfaces. A public beta of Mac OS X will be available this summer enabling customers to experience Apple's next generation operating system firsthand. The final version 1.0 of Mac OS X will be available in January 2001, some 6 months late.

Mac OS X is designed to run on all Macintosh computers using PowerPC G3 and G4 processor chips, and requires a minimum of 64 MB of memory. Apple stock has plunged some 5% on this news. As of this writing, Apple is trading at 101 7/8, down 5.34% from Friday's close.

CNBC has attributed this specifically to the delay of Mac OS X. The Mac Observer Spin: It seems the rumors about the new Preview Release were true, of course, but the addition of Java 2 support is a fantastic development for the new OS. However, seeing the release date pushed back from this summer to January, 2001 is not encouraging. While it's of paramount importance that the product be stable upon it's release, investors never like to see things like this pushed back. We'll have to take a 'wait-and-see' attitude and will be sure to give you more information as the public beta hits the streets later this summer.

You can find more information about these companies at their Web sites. The Mac Observer Spin: 200 developers is good, but 2000 is better. That said, 200 for a brand new platform, in effect, is actually outstanding.

It helps that some mighty big names are involved, and that should help lure more developers into the Mac OS X fold. Updated 2:00 PM WWDC News: Wait No More, The Announcements Have Come! By Staff Updated 2:00 PM Apple has at last let the information flow, waiting until the keynote presentation ended. The news will be appearing over the course of the next 15 minutes at The Mac Observer. The Keynote speech began 1 hour and 20 minutes ago at Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference. As traffic to The Mac Observer increases to a record pace, we thought we would let you know that as of this writing, there is still no news, official or otherwise, coming from the conference.

Normally Apple posts their press releases to fairly coincide with a keynote address. That said, either Apple has decided not to do so, or there are to be no new product announcements at this show. Option Two is that any new product announcements are being held, for whatever reason, until tomorrow's keynote by Phil Schiller, Mitch Manditch, and Jon Rubenstein. The last option is that there will simply not be any new product releases at this year's show, an eventuality that we find to be doubtful. The Mac Observer Spin: To quote singer/songwriter Poe, The anticipation is a turn on. Actually, that just isn't true as the entire staff at The Mac Observer is pulling their hair out wondering what's happening at this keynote.

This is the first keynote that Apple has done without some sort of simulcast, not counting ones made unwatchable from a traffic load that was just too high, during the last 15 or so months. 2:00 PM Tenon Releases WebTen W.API As Open Source by Staff Tenon Intersystems has released the source code for W.API Apache module to accelerate Mac OS X Transition. A new Apache module development kit is also available from now on, combining with the other open source to form Open-WebTen.

According to Tenon: Tenon Intersystems today released the sources for a significant component of their WebTen Apache implementation. This open source distribution is designed to help Macintosh WebSTAR plug-in developers who want to develop Apache modules. The distribution also includes dynamic module Apache plug-in support, Mac OS Toolbox API for building hybrid UNIX/Mac modules and Macintosh ACGI support. WebTen was introduced in 1997, bringing Apache to the Macintosh platform for the first time. A key component of the WebTen development included extending Apache to support WebSTAR-style plug-ins. The WebSTAR plug-in interface is unique to the Mac OS platform.

Including a modwsapi (the Apache module that implemented the WebSTAR plug-in specification) allowed Macintosh webmasters that embraced WebTen to take advantage of standard Apache modules and standard internet Perl and PHP CGIs, while also keeping their legacy WebSTAR plug-ins. Now that Mac OS X is available with built-in Apache and a standard Apache execution environment, WebSTAR plug-in developers will want to build Apache modules, giving them access to the more than six million Apache web sites, across heterogeneous platforms, and enhancing their plug-in performance. This open source distribution is designed to help Macintosh WebSTAR plug-in developers who want to develop Apache modules. The distribution also includes dynamic module Apache plug-in support, Mac OS Toolbox API for building hybrid UNIX/Mac modules and Macintosh ACGI support.

Now that Mac OS X is available with built-in Apache and a standard Apache execution environment, WebSTAR plug-in developers will want to build Apache modules, giving them access to the more than six million Apache web sites, across heterogeneous platforms, and enhancing their plug-in performance. In addition to open sourcing a significant portion of the WebTen code, Tenon is also releasing an open source development tool suite that will make the transition from WebSTAR plug-ins to Apache modules easier. The combined package is called Open-WebTen. The current software development platform for Open-WebTen is Tenon's MachTen (UNIX) for Mac OS. The sources could easily be modified to run under Mac OS X Server. Thus, either platform (Mac OS or Mac OS X Server) could be used to develop Apache modules for eventual deployment on Mac OS X or on Linux. You can the release from this link.

Adobe is the 3rd largest Mac developer outside Apple and Microsoft, and they are certainly considered a software giant with close to a billion dollars a year in sales. For their CEO to make a keynote speech at Machack underlies the resurgent health of the Mac market.

11:00 AM Apple Among The Rich, Famous, And Beautiful At The Annual Cannes Festival by Staff Apple is set to make a strong appearance at the annual gathering of the world's beautiful and famous, also known as the Cannes Film Festival. The annual festival provides a forum for actors to promote their latest masterpieces while bumping elbows with many of the industry elite. Apple, and QuickTime 4, is set to be the sole provider of the streaming side of the festival. According to Observer JS Warkocz, who kindly translated the from French to English: 'The festival de Cannes, beginning today, is the occasion for Apple to showcase its control in editing and Webcasting technologies. Indeed, CanalPlus chose Apple and its technologies for its on-line coverage of the most famous movie festival. 'The PowerBook first interested us, because of its battery life and weight., Laurence Serehen, the person in charge of partnerships at Canal Plus, according to SVMMac (a French Mac magazine). 'Lest year, we had only one NetMan with a Vaio.

Then, we tried Gateway but now, the Apple portable seems the more accurate for our needs.' It's simply a sort of 'multimedia reporter,' with a PowerBook, a mini camcorder at hand and a wireless broadcast station in his back. Netmen and Netgirls walk on the site of the festival on roller skates to catch events that capture the atmosphere of everyday life at the festival. On the Webcast side, Quicktime Streaming technology was of course chosen.

Every day, Apple and Canal's common Web site will broadcast Netmen's and Netgirls' productions. Warkocz for his translation. 10:50 AM Steve Jobs WWDC Keynote Today by Updated 10:50 AM CDT: As of 10:50 AM CDT (8:50 AM PDT), there are no announced plans for a Webcast of the keynote speech. There is a satellite broadcast scheduled, but that is a limited event according to the Web site. The long awaited and much hyped World Wide Developer's Conference for Apple begins today with a Steve Jobs' keynote. Jobs, Apple's CEO, will be delivering the first keynote of the conference at 10:00 AM PDT with Avie Tevanian, Jr., Ph.D, Apple's Senior Vice President Software Engineering. Phil Schiller, Mitch Manditch, and Jon Rubenstein will be delivering the second keynote on Tuesday morning. Jobs is expected to show off new developments in Mac OS X as well as new hardware.

At this point, we do not expect to be able to deliver live coverage of the keynote. We will be the first to bring coverage of any new product announcements however, so stay tuned to The Mac Observer for more news throughout the day. The Mac Observer Spin: Rumors have circulated rampantly that Apple will be showing off multiprocessor PowerMac G4s, and we think that this is indeed likely. It is also likely that such units will not ship until the final version of Mac OS X ships sometime this summer (Think MACWORLD). We also feel that Apple will unveil new PowerMac G4s with faster G4 processors, though we have no direct evidence for this.

Woe be to Apple if their AIM partners still have not gotten beyond the 500 MHz mark. Lastly, we do not expect new PowerBooks or iMacs, though a speedbumped iBook is overdue. Most improbable would be an introduction of a new handheld device from the company in that the venue is not appropriate.

Any handheld device from the company is much more likely to be introduced at a consumer oriented event such as MACWORLD. We think that if Apple is going to enter this market that they will wait until then to officially show such a device. In any event, this should be the most exciting WWDC, especially for the developers themselves, in years if not ever. 8:00 AM Sonnet Announces Latest Round Of Upgrade Card Price Cuts by Staff In the seemingly monthly price cuts on G3/G4 upgrade cards, Sonnet has announced their latest prices bringing upgrade cards within reach of most Mac users.
